Plaka

Nowadays, Plaka is the island’s capital and it is also one of the most intact capitals of Cyclades.

The story

Plaka, Milos’ present-day capital, stands as a testament to the island’s enduring history and Cycladic charm. Renowned as one of the most well-preserved capitals in the Cyclades, Plaka’s name originates from the level ground where its initial dwellings were constructed, offering refuge when the Castle (Kastro) could no longer accommodate the burgeoning population.

Perched on a hillock 220 meters above sea level, Plaka captivates with its Cycladic architecture, bathed in island colors, and a labyrinth of tiled alleys crafted originally to thwart pirate invasions. The prohibition of car circulation enhances the authenticity of this enchanting village, where traditional shops, restaurants, and cafeterias beckon visitors to explore its quaint charms. The magical panoramic view of Milos’ bay from Plaka further elevates the village to a place of infinite beauty that demands exploration.

Atop Plaka’s hill stands the majestic Venetian Castle, a historic edifice dating back to the 13th century. This vantage point not only provides breathtaking views of the island’s bay and neighboring Cycladic islands but also serves as an idyllic setting for experiencing mesmerizing sunsets. The “Mesa Panaghia” or the Assumption of the Virgin is the church crowning the Castle, while the ascent and descent reveal another gem on a black rock: the Ypapanti of Christ or Panaghia Thalassitra. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the island’s cathedral, “Panaghia Korfiatissa,” situated in Plaka, where the marble yard becomes the perfect stage for witnessing dreamy sunsets.

In addition to its scenic allure, Plaka houses essential public services and two museums dedicated to preserving Milos’ rich cultural heritage. These museums showcase the island’s archaeological and folklore treasures, offering visitors a profound insight into Milos’ multifaceted history. Plaka, with its historic landmarks, vibrant atmosphere, and cultural significance, invites you to unravel the layers of time woven into its charming streets and embrace the timeless allure of this Cycladic gem.
